Representatives of various prestigious festivals, jazz clubs, concert agencies and publishers from all over the world will observe the young jazz musicians competing in Jazz Juniors. The festival stage will host jazz premieres, and the competition finale will be the amazing project “Tribute to Tomasz Stańko.”

The International Contest of Young Jazz Ensembles Jazz Juniors has played an important role in the history of Polish jazz since its inception in 1976. It was on the Jazz Juniors stage that artists such as Leszek Możdżer, Krzysztof Ścierański, Zbigniew Wegehaupt, Marek Bałata, the Niedziela brothers, the Pospieszalscy brothers, and groups like New Presentation, Walk Away and the cult Miłość took their first steps. Today, Jazz Juniors is still among the top jazz competitions, and its winners are more and more recognisable internationally.

This year’s edition of Jazz Juniors, forty-second, will start on 20 November, and will be traditionally split into the competition and the festival part. The programme of the event also includes premiere showcases for, among others, winners of previous editions of Jazz Juniors.

The two rounds of auditions will take place already on 29 and 30 November. The young jazz performers will be judged by an international jury, including representatives of prestigious festivals, jazz clubs, concert agencies, and publishers from all over the world. The auditions will take place at the ICE Congress Centre in Krakow, and the winners will be announced during the winners’ concert on 1 December.

The cycle of concerts by the stars of the festival will start on 29 November. The star of the first evening will be the Marcin Wasilewski Trio, who will premiere their concert album “Live.” On the following night, the festival stage will see, for the first time in this part of Europe, a Chinese guitarist’s ensemble Jun Xiao Quintet. The Wójciński/Szmańda Quartet, chosen the best showcase group of last year’s edition, will perform on 1 December.

Jazz Juniors will close this year with a project prepared especially on the organisers’ request, the concert “Tribute to Tomasz Stańko.” The leader of the project is Adam Pierończyk, one of the most renowned Polish jazz saxophone players, who was often invited to cooperate by Stańko himself. World giants, including the trumpet player Avishai Cohen, bassist Joe Martin, and percussionist Jeff „Tain” Watts, will take part in the concert devoted to one of the most brilliant artists in the history of Polish jazz, who died a few months ago.

The premiere showcases will take place nightly from 29 November to 2 December at the Piec Art club (Szewska 12). The performers will include Jazz Juniors winners from previous editions. On 29 November, the winner of Jazz Juniors 2016, Tomasz Chyła Quinted, will premiere their latest album “Circlesong.” On the following night, one of last year’s finalists, Vibe Quartet, will present premiere material from their album “Hidden Perspectives.” The premiere on Saturday will be the winner of last year’s Jazz Juniors, Quantum Trio, and on the final night the stage of Piec Art will see the winner of the “Jazz nad Odrą” competition – the Weezdob collective, who will present their premiere album “Star Cadillac.”

All the performances of the participants and winners of the Jazz Juniors competitions, as well as concerts of the festival stars, will take place in the theatre hall of ICE Krakow. The finale concert “Tribute to Tomasz Stańko” will take place in the auditorium hall of ICE Krakow.
